Georgian and Russian Language Lessons

Teaching Staff and Methodology

American Councils has coordinated language study programs in Georgia for over 30 U.S. graduate/undergraduate students over the past ten years in both Georgian and Russian languages (and occasionally in rarer Caucasian languages, such as Avar and Chechen), and has developed long-term professional relationships with some of the best language pedagogues in the region.

Teaching staff of six professionals is headed by Tamar Bacouradze, who over the years has been the teacher most highly rated by visiting students and is one of the most sought after teacher for foreigners in Georgia . All six teachers are professional linguists and language teachers, have extensive experience working with foreign (and particularly American) students, and are experienced in modern Western approaches to language learning and assessment. Along with textbooks and computer based learning materials, teachers place great emphasis on incorporating skills of oral comprehension and activating memory through discussions and game-exercises .

Our methodology of teaching Georgian is based on a coherent structure focusing on developing logical sequences of grammatical categories and taking into consideration the peculiarities of Georgian grammar. At the same time, we focus on current speech patterns by fitting them to the grammatical material. The method is a step-by-step introduction into the Georgian language. The complexities of the Georgian grammar are brought in gradually, picking out and giving primarily the most relevant and frequently occurring phenomena in the language through grammatical and lexical exercises, texts and dialogues.

The teachers are committed to providing excellence in teaching as well as helping the students fulfil their calling. The study takes place in a friendly and understanding atmosphere. The teachers in the American Councils team are very patient, ready to explain and assist and were selected with care. They represent some of the best language-teaching professionals in Georgia .
